Esotericism vs occultism vs mysticism

Esotericism

An umbrella term used for certain historical currents and forms of specialized or hidden knowledge, especially in discussions of Western esoteric traditions.

Occultism

Often refers more specifically to modern movements and practices concerned with occult forces, magic and related systems. Usage varies by period and author.

Mysticism

Usually centers on direct or transformative experience of the divine, ultimate reality or spiritual union within a religious or contemplative context.

Why the distinction matters

A mystical Christian text, a ceremonial magic manual and a modern synthesis of symbolism may all be discussed near “esotericism,” but their goals, practices and historical contexts can be very different.
